History & Story

The USCGC Eagle is one of the most iconic sailing ships in American history — a three-masted barque that has served as the flagship and training ship of the United States Coast Guard since 1946. She was built in 1936 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany, under the name Horst Wessel, as a sail training ship for the German Navy. After World War II, she was taken as a war prize by the United States and renamed Eagle.

At 90 metres in length with 1,800 square metres of sail, the Eagle is one of the largest sailing ships still in active service anywhere in the world. Every year, she takes officer candidates of the US Coast Guard Academy to sea for their summer training cruise — teaching them navigation, seamanship, and leadership in the same way that sailors have been taught for centuries: by going aloft in all weathers to handle real sails on a real ship.

Known as “America’s Tall Ship,” the Eagle has participated in every major international tall ship gathering since the 1960s and is a beloved symbol of American maritime tradition. This ship in a bottle captures her under full canvas, the Stars and Stripes flying from her masts, as she appears on her annual training voyages. Handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
