The flagship that sailed into history. Build Columbus’s Santa María from cherry wood at 1:50 scale — 76 cm of rigging, carved planking, and billowing fabric sails bearing the red cross of Castile.

This 1:50 scale cherry wood kit renders the Santa María at a commanding 76 cm finished length. The hull is built up from individually planked cherry wood strakes; the sails are fabric, pre-cut and ready to rig; the rigging system is rope throughout. At this scale and in this material, the completed model has the weight and warmth of a genuine heirloom piece.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, painting, and rigging required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately.

⚠️ Skill level: Advanced. Significant model-building experience recommended. Please review the instruction manual before beginning assembly.

HISTORY & STORY

The Santa María was the largest of the three ships commanded by Christopher Columbus on his 1492 voyage across the Atlantic — the expedition that made first contact between Europe and the Americas. A carrack of modest size by the standards of her era, she carried Columbus and approximately 40 crew from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, across an ocean no European had charted, arriving at the Bahamas on 12 October 1492.

Her distinctive profile — three masts, square sails on the fore and main bearing the red cross of the Order of Christ, a lateen-rigged mizzen, and a high stern castle — has become one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the history of exploration. The Santa María ran aground on Christmas Day 1492 off the coast of Hispaniola and was lost, but her image endures as a symbol of the age of discovery.
