The grandest vessel of the American river frontier — the Mississippi paddle steamer at 1:100 scale, with three open decks, twin smokestacks, and the iconic sternwheel that drove these floating palaces upriver against the current.

This 1:100 scale kit builds the Mississippi paddle steamer to a finished size of 54 cm L × 11.5 cm W × 26 cm H. Unlike traditional sailing ship models, the Mississippi is an architectural build — the three-deck superstructure with its ornate railings, pilothouse, cargo booms, twin black smokestacks, and paddle wheel create a model of extraordinary structural complexity. The hull and superstructure use basswood and cherry wood throughout, with laser-cut parts for the railings and deck fittings.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, painting, and detailing required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately.

The Mississippi River steamboat was one of the defining technological and cultural phenomena of 19th-century America. From the 1820s onwards, steam-powered paddle wheelers transformed the Mississippi and its tributaries from barriers into highways, carrying cotton, corn, passengers, and the economic energy of a continent from the interior to the port of New Orleans and the wider world.

By the 1870s, the paddle steamer had reached its golden age: vast, ornate vessels of three or four decks, their upper galleries lined with the gingerbread woodwork that gave them the nickname “Floating Palaces.” Mark Twain immortalised this world in Life on the Mississippi (1883), capturing the romance and the danger of a river culture that was already giving way to the railroad. Building this model is a way of stepping into that vanished American world.
