The flagship of the Holy League at the Battle of Lepanto, 1571 — 106 cm of crimson-painted hull, 59 oar banks, twin lateen masts, and an elaborately carved stern gallery rendered at 1:64 scale.

This 1:64 scale kit builds the La Real — the flagship of Don John of Austria at the Battle of Lepanto — to a commanding finished size of 106 cm L × 69.5 cm H. A Mediterranean war galley of the 16th century, the La Real is a fundamentally different build from any sailing ship model: her length is defined by the oar banks that extend on both sides, her low freeboard exposing the full complexity of her deck layout, and her two lateen-rigged masts rising above a hull painted in the distinctive red of the Spanish royal fleet. The ornate gilded stern gallery — headquarters of the commander during battle — is rendered in carved detail at this scale.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, painting, and rigging required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately.

⚠️ Skill level: Advanced. The oar assembly and painted hull require discipline and experience. Significant model-building experience recommended. Please review the instruction manual before beginning assembly.

HISTORY & STORY

La Real was built in 1568 at the Royal Shipyard in Barcelona as the flagship of the Spanish Empire — the largest and most elaborately decorated war galley of her era. On 7 October 1571, she served as the command vessel of Don John of Austria at the Battle of Lepanto, the largest naval engagement of the 16th century, in which the combined fleet of the Holy League — Spain, Venice, Genoa, and the Papal States — decisively defeated the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Patras.

The Battle of Lepanto marked the end of Ottoman naval supremacy in the Mediterranean and the last great battle fought primarily by oared galleys. Among the soldiers who fought aboard the Holy League fleet that day was the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, who lost the use of his left hand in the battle and later described Lepanto as “the most noble and memorable event that past centuries have seen.” La Real is now preserved at the Maritiem Museum in Barcelona.
