Chinese Pleasure Boat Model — Double-Roof River Pavilion, Handcrafted
This is not a decorative boat. It is a painted vessel — a handcrafted wooden pleasure boat model made to order in the Ocean Relic Studio workshop in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.
On the rivers of ancient China, not all boats were built for cargo. The pleasure boat — 画船, literally “painted vessel” — was the watercraft of scholars, poets, and officials who conducted their most important conversations on the water, away from the formality of court and city. These boats were built for lingering: low-slung, canopied against the sun, their railings open to the river breeze.
The double-tiered roof was not merely decorative — it created a layered shade structure that kept the deck cool in the humid heat of the Yangtze Delta summers. The herringbone tile pattern on the canopy was a mark of craftsmanship, a signal that the owner valued the quality of the work. Our craftsmen grew up on an island where wooden boats were still built by hand. They did not learn this form only from books. They inherited it from a living maritime environment.
This model is made in our Zhoushan workshop, founded in 1980 by the father of our master craftsman. Every plank is shaped individually. The lattice railings are assembled joint by joint. The double canopy roof is tiled by hand, one piece at a time.
The Wood
We use carefully selected coastal hardwoods suited for humid maritime environments. The warm, weathered finish you see is not a heavy layer of paint or stain over a uniform surface. It is the natural character of the wood, brought out through hand-sanding and a light protective oil finish.

Who This Is For
The pleasure boat is the most refined vessel in our workshop’s range — a model that suits a home library, a scholar’s desk, or any interior where the owner values objects with cultural depth. Its double-roof silhouette is immediately distinctive on a bookshelf or display cabinet.
As a gift, it is well-suited to anyone with an interest in Chinese history, classical culture, or East Asian art — the collector who already has everything, or the traveler who wants to bring something home that cannot be found in an airport shop.
Display & Care
Place away from direct sunlight and high-humidity environments. Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush. The natural wood finish may deepen slightly with age. This is not deterioration, but part of the natural patina that makes wooden objects more beautiful over time.
Made to order in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China. Each piece is unique. Minor variations in grain, color, and finish are inherent to handcrafted work and are not defects.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Chinese pleasure boat (画船)?
画船, literally “painted vessel,” was a type of river boat used in imperial and literati China for leisure, entertainment, and private gatherings. Unlike cargo junks or fishing boats, pleasure boats were built for comfort and aesthetics — low-slung, canopied, with open railings and decorated interiors. They were associated with scholars, poets, and officials who valued the privacy and informality of the water.
What is the significance of the double-roof design?
The double-tiered roof served a practical function: it created layered shade that kept the deck cool in the humid summers of the Yangtze Delta. The herringbone tile pattern on the canopy was also a marker of quality — a more labor-intensive construction that signaled the owner’s appreciation for craftsmanship. On this model, both tiers are hand-tiled individually.
Who used pleasure boats in ancient China?
Pleasure boats were used primarily by the educated and official classes — scholars, poets, and government officials who conducted private meetings, literary gatherings, and social events on the water. The river setting offered a degree of informality and privacy that was difficult to achieve on land. Many well-known works of classical Chinese poetry and painting reference the pleasure boat as a setting for reflection and conversation.
Does it require assembly?
No. The model arrives fully assembled and display-ready.
Is each model exactly the same?
No. Because every model is handmade, small variations in wood grain, finish, and detail are natural. These differences are part of the character of handcrafted work.
