A-8 Chinese Straw Cabin River Junk — Handcrafted Wooden Fishing Boat Model
This is not a decorative accent. It is a working boat — a handcrafted wooden river fishing junk made to order in the Ocean Relic Studio workshop in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.
Before the container ship, before the steam freighter, before the iron hull — there was this. The river fishing boat was the most common working vessel in Chinese history. For thousands of years, boats like this one moved through the reed-lined waterways of the Yangtze Delta, the Pearl River, and the rivers of Jiangnan — carrying the daily catch that fed the cities of the most populous civilization on earth.
The straw-thatched cabin sheltered the fisherman through rain and sun. The bamboo poles served as mast, boom, and push-pole depending on the need. Nothing on this boat was decorative. Everything had a function. Our craftsmen grew up on an island where boats like this were still in use. They did not reconstruct this form from drawings. They remembered it.
This model is made in our Zhoushan workshop, founded in 1980 by the father of our master craftsman. Every plank of the hull is shaped by hand. The straw cabin roof is woven and fitted individually. The bamboo poles are cut, dried, and mounted one by one.
The Materials
The hull is built from coastal hardwood, hand-sanded and finished with a light protective oil that brings out the natural grain. The cabin roof uses real woven straw — not a synthetic substitute. The bamboo poles are natural, not painted. The finish is honest: what you see is what the material is.

As a gift, it is well-suited to the traveler who has been to China and wants to bring something real home, the history enthusiast who collects objects with provenance, or anyone who appreciates craft over decoration.
Display & Care
Place away from direct sunlight and high-humidity environments. Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush. The natural materials — wood, bamboo, straw — may shift slightly in color with age. This is not deterioration, but the natural patina of honest materials over time.
Made to order in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China. Each piece is unique. Minor variations in grain, color, and finish are inherent to handcrafted work and are not defects.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the A-8 river junk different from other fishing boat models?
The A-8 designation refers to a specific river junk form characterized by its compact flat-bottomed hull, straw-thatched cabin, and bamboo pole rigging. Unlike the cormorant fishing boat, which features a bird figure and open bow, the A-8 is a closed-cabin working boat — the type used for multi-day fishing trips along the inland waterways of Jiangnan. It is the more common of the two river fishing boat forms in our range.
What is the straw cabin used for on a river fishing boat?
The straw-thatched cabin served as shelter for the fisherman during extended trips on the water — protection from rain, sun, and wind. On longer fishing journeys, the cabin also functioned as a sleeping and storage space. The straw construction was practical: lightweight, locally available, and effective insulation in the humid climate of southern China.
How does this model differ from the cormorant fishing boat?
The A-8 model focuses on the straw cabin, bamboo rigging, and compact working-river-boat form — a general-purpose fishing junk. The cormorant fishing boat is a more specialized vessel: open bow, bamboo perch poles, and a carved cormorant bird figure mounted at the stern. The two models represent different fishing traditions and different visual characters.
Does it require assembly?
No. The model arrives fully assembled and display-ready.
Is each model exactly the same?
No. Because every model is handmade from natural materials, small variations in wood grain, straw color, and bamboo tone are natural. These differences are part of the character of handcrafted work.
