The elegance of the Dutch Golden Age at 1:80 scale — a beautifully proportioned first build for anyone drawn to the classic gaff-rigged yacht.

This 1:80 scale kit builds the Dutch Royal Yacht — a single-masted gaff-rigged pleasure vessel of the type favoured by the Dutch nobility during the 17th century. At 30 cm finished length, it is a compact and manageable first project: laser-cut parts, fabric sails, and a rope rigging system that introduces the fundamentals of ship modelling without overwhelming the builder.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, painting, and rigging required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately.

⚠️ Skill level: Beginner. Results will vary based on skill, tools, and finishing choices. Please review the instruction manual before beginning assembly.

HISTORY & STORY

The Dutch Royal Yacht represents one of the most refined vessel types of the Dutch Golden Age — the 17th-century period when the Netherlands dominated world trade, exploration, and naval power. The single-masted gaff-rigged yacht was the preferred leisure vessel of the Dutch ruling class, combining seaworthiness with a degree of ornamentation and comfort uncommon in working vessels of the period.

The type gained international prestige when the Dutch East India Company presented King Charles II of England with a yacht of this design in 1660 — an event that introduced the word “yacht” into the English language and sparked a fashion for pleasure sailing among European aristocracy. Building this model is a way of holding a piece of that history in your hands.
