From the lobster boats of Maine to the crab trawlers of the Pacific Northwest, from the fishing cutters of Cornwall to the trawlers of Brittany, the coastal fishing vessel has taken countless regional forms while remaining essentially the same: a strong, practical hull, a reliable engine, and enough deck space to haul, sort, and ice a day’s catch.

The style of vessel represented in this model — with its raised wheelhouse, outrigger boom, exhaust stack, and crab trap on deck — is characteristic of the small commercial trawlers and crabbers that worked the American Pacific and Atlantic coasts through the mid-20th century. These were boats built for hard use, painted and repainted season after season until the layers of colour told the story of years at sea.
