History & Story

The name Adventure was carried by several notorious vessels during the Golden Age of Piracy (1650–1730). Most famously, the Scottish privateer-turned-pirate Captain William Kidd sailed the Adventure Galley — a hybrid oar-and-sail vessel — on his ill-fated voyage that ended in his capture and execution in 1701. The two-masted schooner rig depicted in this kit represents the fast, nimble pirate vessels that terrorised merchant shipping lanes from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean.

Schooners like the Adventure were prized by pirates for their speed and shallow draft, allowing them to pursue prey in open water and escape into coastal shallows where naval frigates could not follow. The Jolly Roger — the skull-and-crossbones flag — was a deliberate psychological weapon: its appearance on the horizon was enough to make many merchant captains surrender without a fight, sparing both sides the cost of battle.
