HISTORY & STORY

The Knarr was the workhorse of the Viking world — a broad-beamed, ocean-going cargo vessel that connected the Norse world from Scandinavia to Iceland, Greenland, and ultimately the coast of North America. Where the longship was built for speed and raiding, the Knarr was built for endurance and trade, carrying furs, timber, iron, and livestock across some of the most treacherous waters on earth.

Archaeological finds such as the Skuldelev 1 wreck, excavated in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark, have given historians and modellers a precise understanding of the Knarr’s construction. Its high freeboard, deep keel, and single square sail made it the vessel that truly opened the North Atlantic to human exploration.
