History & Story

The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world — a three-masted heavy frigate launched in Boston in 1797 and still technically in active service with the United States Navy today. She was one of the original six frigates authorised by the Naval Act of 1794, built to protect American merchant shipping from pirates and foreign navies in the early years of the Republic.

Her nickname, Old Ironsides, was earned during the War of 1812, when British cannonballs were observed bouncing off her thick oak hull during the engagement with HMS Guerriere on 19 August 1812. The Constitution went on to win every engagement she ever fought, capturing or destroying 33 enemy vessels during her active career and never losing a battle.

Today she is preserved as a museum ship in the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston — a living monument to American naval history and the shipbuilding traditions of the early Republic. This ship in a bottle captures her under full sail, the Stars and Stripes flying, as she appeared in her fighting days on the open Atlantic. Handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
