Tea and spices in the hold, cannon at the ready — the Qilin, a classic Chinese armed merchant junk, waiting to be built.

A wooden ship model kit of the Qilin (麒麟号), a classic Chinese armed merchant junk of the type that once crowded the rivers and harbours of Hong Kong, trading tea and spices along the South China coast. Features a dark red hull with blue-painted bow decorations, three period-accurate battened lute sails in natural linen, cannon ports along the hull, detailed deck fittings, anchor, and red and blue pennants, mounted on a wooden display cradle. All parts are pre-cut and shaped; the builder assembles, rigs, and finishes the model using the included materials.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, painting, and rigging required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately. The finished appearance shown in the images reflects one artisan's interpretation; your completed model will vary depending on the paints, stains, and techniques you choose. Customise the colours and finish to make it your own.

⚠️ Skill level: Intermediate. Results will vary based on skill, tools, and finishing choices. Please review the instruction manual before beginning assembly.

History & Story

The Chinese junk is one of the great ship types of world maritime history — a vessel that has sailed the coasts and rivers of East Asia for more than two thousand years, from the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean, carrying silk, tea, porcelain, and spices along the ancient maritime trade routes that connected China with Southeast Asia, India, and the Arab world.

The armed merchant junk of the Ming and Qing dynasties was a distinctive variant of this tradition — a cargo vessel fitted with cannon and crewed by men who were prepared to defend their goods against pirates and rivals. In the busy waters of the Pearl River Delta, the harbours of Guangzhou, and the anchorages of Hong Kong, these vessels were a common sight: their battened sails catching the monsoon wind, their hulls riding low with cargo, their gun ports a clear warning to anyone who might consider interference.

The Qilin (麂麟) — named for the mythical Chinese unicorn, a symbol of prosperity and good fortune — represents this tradition at its most characteristic. This model kit captures her in full working order: three sails set, pennants flying, anchor ready. Handcrafted and kitted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been building maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
