A 1:35 scale wooden model kit — the Pellworm, a classic North Sea fishing cutter, built by your own hands.

This 1:35 scale kit faithfully reproduces the Pellworm in premium basswood: a planked hull with characteristic rounded stern, working deck fittings, fishing equipment, masts, and rope rigging. A charming and rewarding build that captures the everyday working life of the North Sea fishing tradition.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, painting, and rigging required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately. The finished appearance shown in the images reflects one artisan's interpretation; your completed model will vary depending on the paints, stains, and techniques you choose.

History & Story

Pellworm is a small island in the North Frisian archipelago off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany — one of the Halligen, low-lying marsh islands that have shaped the seafaring and fishing culture of the German North Sea coast for centuries. The island and its fishing fleet have long been a part of the working maritime heritage of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most ecologically significant tidal regions in the world.

The vessel type modelled here — the German Kutter, or fishing cutter — is the workhorse of the North Sea inshore and coastal fishing fleet. Typically 12 to 20 metres in length, these robust wooden and steel vessels are built to handle the challenging conditions of the southern North Sea: strong tidal currents, shallow sandbanks, and rapidly changing weather. They fish for shrimp, flatfish, and herring, deploying beam trawls and drift nets in the shallow coastal waters.

This model captures the Pellworm cutter PEL 256 in her working livery — blue hull, red boot stripe, nets rigged and ready. It is a tribute to the generations of North Sea fishermen whose daily labour has shaped the coast, the culture, and the cuisine of northern Germany. Handcrafted and kitted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been building maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
