A 1:50 scale wooden model kit — the rotating gun platform of the USS Oneida, armed with a precision-machined brass cannon, built by your own hands.

This 1:50 scale kit faithfully reproduces the 32-pound swivel cannon turret of the USS Oneida in cherry wood and brass. The circular gun deck is planked by hand, the brass cannon is CNC-machined to 58mm (solid, non-firing), and the full structural frame features authentic hinge-pin cannon trunnions and three grades of rigging rope. At 12 cm diameter and 3.8 cm height, this is a focused, satisfying build that showcases naval artillery craftsmanship in miniature.

⚠️ This is a model kit requiring assembly — not a finished model. Cannon is solid brass

 — decorative only, cannot fire. Tools required: hobby knife, tweezers, wood glue (not included).

History & Story

The USS Oneida was an American brig-of-war that served on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. As one of the key vessels in the contest for control of the Great Lakes, she was armed with a battery of long guns and carronades — including the formidable 32-pound swivel cannon mounted on a rotating gun platform, allowing a single weapon to cover a wide arc of fire.

The rotating cannon turret represented a significant tactical innovation of the era. By mounting a heavy gun on a circular traversing platform, naval architects gave small vessels the firepower of a much larger ship. The USS Oneida’s gun deck became a symbol of American ingenuity in freshwater naval warfare — a legacy preserved in this meticulously detailed 1:50 scale kit.
