The Niña — formally named Santa Clara — was the smallest and most nimble of the three ships that sailed with Columbus in 1492. She was a caravel, a type of light, fast sailing vessel favoured by Portuguese and Spanish explorers for its ability to sail close to the wind. Columbus himself considered her his favourite ship.

After the Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas Day 1492, the Niña carried Columbus safely back to Spain — the ship that completed the most consequential ocean crossing in history.
