The Nanhu Red Boat is one of the most symbolically significant vessels in modern Chinese history. In July 1921, as the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was forced to relocate from Shanghai under threat of police raids, delegates moved to a rented pleasure boat on South Lake (Nanhu) in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. It was aboard this modest wooden craft that the congress concluded and the party was formally established.

The original boat — a traditional jiangnan youfang (river pleasure boat) — was a flat-bottomed, enclosed wooden vessel typical of the waterways of the Yangtze Delta. Dark-lacquered, low-slung, and quietly elegant, it has since become an enduring emblem of Chinese revolutionary history. The vessel is now preserved and commemorated at the Nanhu Revolutionary Museum in Jiaxing, where a replica rests on the lake year-round.
