The sampan — from the Chinese sānbǎn, meaning “three planks” — is one of the most enduring watercraft in East Asian history. For centuries, these small flat-bottomed boats with their distinctive arched cabin roofs served as home, workshop, and transport for millions of families living on the rivers, canals, and harbors of China, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia.

The woven rattan cabin at the center of this model — curved to shed rain, open at both ends to catch the breeze — is a form that appears in Song Dynasty paintings and Ming woodblock prints alike. It is a design so well-suited to river life that it survived largely unchanged for over a thousand years.
