The bamboo raft is one of the oldest watercraft in human history. Along the rivers of southern China — the Pearl, the Min, the Yangtze — bamboo rafts carried fishermen, traders, and scholars for thousands of years. Lightweight, buoyant, and built from the most abundant material in the landscape, the raft required no nails, no sails, and no shipwright. Just bamboo, rope, and the knowledge passed from hand to hand across generations.

The carved inscription band at the center of this model echoes the bamboo scrolls that once carried China's written knowledge — a reminder that the same material that floated goods down river also carried ideas across dynasties.
