History & Story

The ship-in-a-bottle is one of the most enduring and beloved traditions in maritime folk art. Dating back to at least the early 19th century, these intricate creations were originally made by sailors during long voyages — a way to pass the time and demonstrate extraordinary patience and skill. The challenge of assembling a fully rigged ship inside a sealed glass bottle, using nothing but long tools pushed through the narrow neck, made each piece a small miracle of craft.

The Liberty is a classic three-masted sailing ship — a vessel type that dominated global trade and exploration from the 16th to the 19th century. With her square-rigged sails and web of standing and running rigging, she represents the golden age of sail, when wind and wood carried goods and people across every ocean on earth.

This ship in a bottle brings that tradition into your home — handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
