This solid wood version of the Le Coureu builds at 1:80 scale to a finished size of 54.6 cm L × 9 cm W × 43 cm H. A two-masted gaff schooner of the French Navy launched in 1776, her low, fast hull and generous sail plan made her a natural choice for dispatch and reconnaissance duties. The kit includes individually planked hull strakes, fabric sails, rope rigging, and all deck fittings — an intermediate build that rewards careful work with a graceful, gallery-worthy result.

Le Coureu (French for “The Runner”) was a two-masted gaff schooner of the French Navy, launched in 1776 during the reign of Louis XVI. Built for speed and agility rather than firepower, she was employed primarily as a dispatch vessel and scout — a role that suited her long, low hull and expansive sail plan perfectly. She operated during one of the most turbulent periods in European history, when France was simultaneously engaged in the American Revolutionary War as an ally of the colonies and navigating the political tensions that would culminate in the French Revolution of 1789.

The gaff schooner rig she carried — with fore-and-aft sails on both masts and a bowsprit carrying a large jib — allowed her to sail closer to the wind than square-rigged vessels, making her ideal for the fast, independent operations that dispatch work demanded. She represents the peak of French naval architecture in the age of sail.
