A 1:16 scale wooden model kit — the legendary Kon-Tiki balsa raft that crossed 8,000 km of open Pacific Ocean in 1947, now yours to build and display.

This 1:16 scale kit faithfully reproduces the Kon-Tiki, the iconic balsa log raft sailed by Thor Heyerdahl and his crew from Peru to Polynesia. Built from coconut wood and cherry wood, the kit features a thatched bamboo cabin, cargo crates, rope lashings, and the unmistakable fabric sail hand-printed with the Tiki sun-god motif. At 402 mm finished length, this is a bold, story-rich build that commands attention on any shelf.

History & Story

In 1947, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl set out to prove that ancient Polynesia could have been settled by South Americans. He built a raft from balsa logs — using only materials and techniques available to pre-Columbian peoples — and named it Kon-Tiki after the Inca sun god. On April 28, 1947, the six-man crew departed Callao, Peru.

One hundred and one days and 8,000 kilometers later, the Kon-Tiki crashed onto the reef of Raroia atoll in French Polynesia — completing one of the most audacious ocean voyages in modern history. The expedition became a global sensation, winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1952. The original raft is preserved today at the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo, Norway, a testament to human courage and the enduring mystery of the Pacific.
