Zhoushan 1980 Chinese River Boat Model — Handcrafted Wooden Workshop Edition

This is not a reproduction. It is a continuation — a handcrafted wooden river junk model made to order in the Ocean Relic Studio workshop in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.

The river junk — flat-bottomed, canopied, and built for the slow commerce of China’s inland waterways — was one of the working vessels of Chinese civilization for centuries. Grain, silk, porcelain, salt, and everyday goods moved through the Yangtze Delta on boats like this. Our craftsmen grew up on an island where wooden boats were still built by hand. They did not learn this form only from books. They inherited it from a living maritime environment.

This model is made in our Zhoushan workshop, founded in 1980 by the father of our master craftsman, on an archipelago with a long tradition of wooden boat-building. Every plank is shaped individually. The lattice railings are assembled joint by joint. The canopy roof is tiled by hand, one piece at a time.

The Wood

We use carefully selected coastal hardwoods suited for humid maritime environments. The warm, weathered finish you see is not a heavy layer of paint or stain over a uniform surface. It is the natural character of the wood, brought out through hand-sanding and a light protective oil finish.

What You Receive

  • One handcrafted river junk model, built to order in Zhoushan
  • Solid wooden display base, fitted and finished to match
  • Dimensions: 35 cm L × 9 cm W × 9 cm H
  • Materials: coastal hardwood, natural wood grain finish
  • No assembly required — arrives display-ready

Who This Is For

This is the model that best represents what our workshop does at its core: a river junk, faithfully rendered, built from wood and shaped by the same hands that have continued this craft since 1980. It suits a home office, study, bookshelf, or any space where the owner wants an object with genuine provenance.

As a gift, it is appropriate for anyone who values authenticity: the collector, the traveler, the maritime history enthusiast, or the person who wants to give something that cannot be found in a department store.

Display & Care

Place away from direct sunlight and high-humidity environments. Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush. The natural wood finish may deepen slightly with age. This is not deterioration, but part of the natural patina that makes wooden objects more beautiful over time.

Made to order in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China. Each piece is unique. Minor variations in grain, color, and finish are inherent to handcrafted work and are not defects.

About Our Workshop

Unlike mass-produced hobby kits or factory-stamped decor, every piece at Ocean Relic Studio is built to order in our Zhoushan workshop. We use traditional woodworking and model-making techniques developed through decades of practice, so each boat model serves as a durable, meaningful focal point for your home, office, or collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a river junk?

A river junk is a flat-bottomed wooden vessel designed for China’s inland waterways — the Yangtze Delta, the Pearl River, and the canal networks of Jiangnan. Unlike ocean-going junks built for deep water, river junks were shallow-drafted and canopied, optimized for slow cargo transport through reeds and shallows. They were among the most common working vessels in Chinese history for over a thousand years.

Why is this model called a “continuation” rather than a reproduction?

A reproduction implies working from a historical record to recreate something lost. Our craftsmen grew up on Zhoushan, an archipelago where wooden boat-building was still practiced when they were young. They learned this form from a living environment, not from drawings or museum archives. The knowledge is unbroken — which is why we call it a continuation rather than a reproduction.

What does “built to order” mean for this model?

We do not maintain a warehouse of finished models. Each piece is made after your order is placed, by the same craftsmen in the same Zhoushan workshop. This means your model has not been sitting in storage — it is made for you, which also means minor natural variations in wood grain and finish are part of what you receive.

Does it require assembly?

No. The model arrives fully assembled and display-ready.

Is each model exactly the same?

No. Because every model is handmade, small variations in wood grain, finish, and detail are natural. These differences are part of the character of handcrafted work.
