This is not a novelty. It is a record — a handcrafted wooden cormorant fishing boat model made to order in the Ocean Relic Studio workshop in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.

Before sonar, before nylon nets, before industrial trawlers — there was the cormorant. For over a thousand years, fishermen along the rivers and lakes of southern China trained cormorant birds to dive and retrieve fish. The birds perched on bamboo poles mounted at the bow, waiting. The fisherman read the water. Nothing was wasted. Nothing was loud.

The straw-thatched cabin sheltered the fisherman through rain and sun. The open bow was where the work happened: bamboo perch poles, oar supports, and a single cormorant standing at the tip, exactly as it would have in life. The flat-bottomed hull was built for the shallow, reed-lined waterways of Jiangnan — not the open sea, but the intimate rivers that fed a civilization.

This model is made in our Zhoushan workshop, founded in 1980 by the father of our master craftsman, on an archipelago where wooden boat-building is recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Every element is assembled by hand from natural materials.

The Materials

The hull is solid wood with a warm, aged finish brought out through hand-sanding and a light protective oil. The perch poles and crossbeams are real bamboo. The cabin roof is hand-woven straw — not synthetic. The cormorant figure is carved and mounted on the stern perch pole. What you see is what the material is.

Who This Is For

This is the most distinctive model in our range — a vessel type that most people have never seen rendered in miniature. It suits a study, a bookshelf, or a display cabinet where the owner wants an object that tells a specific story, not just a general one about the sea.

As a gift, it is well-suited to anyone with a genuine interest in Chinese cultural history, traditional fishing practices, or the relationship between humans and animals in pre-industrial life. It is the kind of object that prompts a conversation.

Display & Care

Place away from direct sunlight and high-humidity environments. Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush, taking care around the cormorant figure and bamboo poles. The natural materials may deepen slightly in color with age — this is the patina of honest materials, not deterioration.

Made to order in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China. Each piece is unique. Minor variations in grain, straw color, and bamboo tone are inherent to handcrafted work and are not defects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cormorant fishing?

Cormorant fishing is a traditional method in which trained cormorant birds dive into rivers and lakes to catch fish, which they retrieve for the fisherman. A snare around the bird’s neck prevents it from swallowing larger fish. The practice has been documented in China for over a thousand years and was once widespread across the rivers and lakes of southern China, particularly in Guangxi, Hunan, and Zhejiang provinces.

How long has cormorant fishing been practiced in China?

Written and pictorial records of cormorant fishing in China date to at least the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE), and some scholars suggest the practice may be older. It remained a common fishing method in parts of southern China through the twentieth century, though it is now practiced primarily for cultural preservation and tourism. The boat form in this model reflects the vessel type associated with this tradition.

What does the cormorant figure represent on this model?

The carved cormorant figure mounted on the stern perch pole represents the bird at rest between dives — the moment of stillness that defined the rhythm of cormorant fishing. It is not a decorative addition but a functional element of the vessel type: the perch pole was where the bird stood, and its position at the stern reflects the actual configuration used by fishermen.

Does it require assembly?

No. The model arrives fully assembled and display-ready. The flat-bottom hull is freestanding — no display base is required.

Is each model exactly the same?

No. Because every model is handmade from natural materials, small variations in wood grain, straw color, and bamboo tone are natural. These differences are part of the character of handcrafted work.
