A beautifully approachable first build — the Flattle brings together basswood, sapele, and teak in a compact 20 cm kit that introduces the fundamentals of wooden ship modelling.

At 1:35 scale and 20 cm finished length (including display base), the Flattle is a compact and welcoming first project. The hull uses a three-wood system — basswood for the structural base, sapele for the warm reddish outer strakes, and teak for the deck — producing a finished model with striking material contrast. Fabric sails and a simple rope rigging complete the build at a pace suited to first-time modellers.

🔧 This is a model kit — assembly, planking, and rigging required. Tools, adhesives, and paints are not included and must be sourced separately.

Simple in concept but demanding to build at model scale, the flat-bottomed hull form requires careful planking to achieve the characteristic boxy profile while maintaining structural integrity throughout.

At 1:35 scale, every plank, fitting, and rigging line is rendered in miniature with little room for error. The combination of basswood, sapele, and teak — three woods with distinct grain, colour, and working properties — gives the completed model a material richness that punches well above its compact dimensions.
