History & Story

The image of a lone fisherman in a small boat has been one of the most enduring subjects in Chinese art and poetry for over a thousand years. From the ink-wash landscapes of the Tang Dynasty to the woodblock prints of the Qing, the fisherman — patient, unhurried, at one with the water — became a symbol of wisdom, simplicity, and the Taoist ideal of living in harmony with nature.

The wicker boat beneath him — woven from rattan and bamboo, light enough to be carried on a single shoulder — was the everyday vessel of river fishermen across southern China for centuries. The woven leaf hat, pulled low against sun and rain, is a detail that appears in paintings from the Song Dynasty onward, unchanged across a thousand years of river life.

This ship model brings that timeless scene into your home — handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
