History & Story

一帆风顺 — "Fair winds, smooth sailing" — is one of the most beloved expressions in the Chinese language. Used for over a thousand years to wish travellers, sailors, merchants, and students a safe and successful journey, it captures in four characters a world of hope: that the winds will be kind, the seas calm, and the destination reached without difficulty.

The expression has its roots in the maritime culture of coastal China, where fishing communities and merchant sailors depended entirely on the wind. Before setting out, sailors would pray at temple shrines dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea, asking for fair winds and protection. The phrase became a standard farewell, a blessing, and a wish — and remains in everyday use in Chinese today whenever someone embarks on a new journey, whether by sea or by life.

This ship in a bottle carries that blessing sealed in glass — handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980. A meaningful gift for anyone setting out on a new chapter.
