HISTORY & STORY

The sampan — from the Chinese sān bǎn ("three planks") — is one of the oldest and most enduring watercraft in East Asian history. For centuries, these flat-bottomed wooden boats have navigated the rivers, canals, and harbours of China, serving as fishing vessels, ferries, and floating homes for generations of river communities.

Simple in form yet masterful in function, the sampan's shallow draft and lightweight construction made it perfectly suited to the intricate waterways of southern China. From the Pearl River Delta to the Li River, the sampan became an inseparable part of daily life — and a lasting symbol of China's deep connection to its waterways.
