Chinese Fu Chuan Junk Ship Model — Hand-Carved Rosewood, Three-Mast
This is not a replica. It is a fortune ship — a hand-carved rosewood Fu Chuan junk model made to order in the Ocean Relic Studio workshop in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.
福船 — the Fortune Ship. The Fu Chuan was one of the most capable ocean-going vessels in Chinese maritime history: a deep V-shaped hull that handled open-sea swells, a high stern that gave the helmsman command over the deck, and a three-mast rig that could be adjusted for wind from any quarter. It was the hull form that carried Zheng He’s treasure fleets across the Indian Ocean in the early fifteenth century, and it remained in use along the South China Sea trade routes for centuries after.
The name 福船 carries a second meaning beyond the vessel type: fortune, prosperity, a favorable wind. For centuries, this model has been displayed in homes and offices as an auspicious object — a ship sailing toward good fortune, placed where the owner can see it daily. Our craftsmen grew up on an island where this tradition was still alive. They did not learn this form only from books. They inherited it from a living maritime environment.
This model is made in our Zhoushan workshop, founded in 1980 by the father of our master craftsman. Every element is carved and assembled by hand: the hull planking, the three-mast rigging, the deck fittings, the carved bow detail.
The Wood
This model is carved from rosewood hardwood — a dense, close-grained timber with a naturally warm, deep color that deepens further with age. The surface is hand-sanded and finished with a light protective oil that brings out the grain without masking it. The color you see is the wood itself, not a stain applied over a uniform surface.

Display & Care
Place away from direct sunlight and high-humidity environments. Dust occasionally with a soft dry brush. Rosewood may deepen in color with age and light exposure — this is the natural patina of the timber, not deterioration.
Made to order in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China. Each piece is unique. Minor variations in grain, color, and finish are inherent to handcrafted work and are not defects.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Fu Chuan junk ship?
A Fu Chuan (福船), or “Fortune Ship,” was a traditional Chinese ocean-going junk associated with maritime trade and naval use during the Song and Ming dynasties. Its deep V-shaped hull and high stern made it well-suited for open-sea voyages, and it is the vessel type most closely associated with the great Chinese maritime expeditions of the early fifteenth century.
Is this model based on Zheng He’s treasure fleet?
The model is inspired by the Fu Chuan vessel type associated with Chinese ocean-going ships, including the maritime tradition connected to Zheng He’s voyages. The exact dimensions of Zheng He’s treasure ships remain debated among historians; this model reflects the established Fu Chuan hull form rather than a specific historical vessel.
Why is this model made from rosewood rather than other woods?
Rosewood is a dense, close-grained hardwood with a naturally deep, warm color that suits the scale and presence of the Fu Chuan form. It is also a timber with historical significance in Chinese decorative arts. The grain and color of rosewood deepen with age, which means the model tends to become more visually distinctive over time rather than fading.
Does it require assembly?
No. The model arrives fully assembled and display-ready.
Is each model exactly the same?
No. Because every model is hand-carved from natural rosewood, variations in grain pattern and color depth are natural. These differences are part of the character of the timber.
