HISTORY & STORY

Sailing as sport and leisure has a long history in the United States, rooted in the great yacht clubs of the 19th century — the New York Yacht Club, founded in 1844, the Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead, the San Francisco Yacht Club — each representing a community of sailors for whom the sea was not a place of labour but of competition, adventure, and pleasure.

The America’s Cup, first contested in 1851, became the defining event of American yacht racing and the longest-running international sporting trophy in history. American yachts — flying the Stars and Stripes — dominated the competition for 132 years, winning every contest from 1851 to 1983 in one of sport’s most remarkable dynasties. The image of a sailing yacht under the American flag became a powerful symbol of seamanship, competition, and national pride.

This model captures that spirit — the Stars and Stripes filling the mainsail, the natural wood hull clean against the wind. It is a tribute to the American sailing tradition and a striking piece for any nautical collection.
