Histoire et récit

The Ictineo II was a pioneering submarine designed and built by Catalan inventor Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol, launched in Barcelona in 1864. It was the world's first combustion-powered submarine, capable of operating independently of surface air — a revolutionary achievement that predated modern submarine technology by decades.

Powered by a steam engine fueled by a chemical reaction that simultaneously generated heat and oxygen, the Ictineo II could dive to depths of 30 meters and remain submerged for extended periods. Its distinctive cigar-shaped wooden hull, reinforced with copper and iron, was both elegant and functional — a testament to Monturiol's genius as an engineer and visionary.

Though the project ultimately failed due to lack of funding, the Ictineo II remains one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of the 19th century. This 1:28 scale model kit pays tribute to that legacy — a rewarding build for collectors and history enthusiasts alike.
