Scholars, merchants, officials, and poets all traveled by river, and the flat-bottomed wooden boat was the vessel of choice for journeys along the Yangtze, the Grand Canal, and the countless waterways that connected China’s cities, towns, and villages.

The scholar-official class — the literati — were particularly associated with river travel. Many of China’s greatest poets wrote their most celebrated works while journeying by boat: Su Shi composed his Red Cliff Odes from a river skiff, and countless Tang and Song poets found in the rhythm of the current a metaphor for the passage of time and the impermanence of human affairs.

This ship model captures one such moment — a scholar at rest on the water, the world reduced to mist, lotus, and the quiet sound of the river. Handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
