On 3 August 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos de la Frontera in southern Spain with three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. The Santa Maria was the largest of the three — a carrack of approximately 18 metres in length, carrying a crew of around 40 men. She was Columbus’s flagship, the ship from which he would sight land and claim the New World on behalf of the Spanish Crown.

On 12 October 1492, after 70 days at sea, Columbus made landfall in the Bahamas — an event that would permanently alter the course of human history. The Santa Maria herself did not survive the voyage home: she ran aground on the coast of Hispaniola on Christmas Day 1492, and Columbus used her timbers to build the first European settlement in the Americas, a small fort he named La Navidad.

Though the original Santa Maria was lost, she lives on in the imagination as the most famous ship of the Age of Discovery — the vessel that connected two worlds. This ship in a bottle captures her under full sail, the red cross on her mainsail catching the wind, bound for a horizon no European had ever crossed. Handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
