Stable in shallow water, easy to maneuver with a single stern oar, and sheltered enough to keep a fisherman dry through a morning rain, these compact craft were perfectly adapted to the waterways they worked.

The woven canopy — a low arch of rattan or bamboo strips, open at the bow — appears in paintings and woodblock prints from the Tang Dynasty onward. It is a form born of practical necessity that became, over time, one of the most recognizable silhouettes of Chinese river life.
