Along the rivers and canals of ancient China, flat-bottomed wicker boats were the workhorses of daily life. Woven from bamboo and rattan, their lightweight hulls and covered cabins made them ideal for transporting goods, sheltering passengers from rain, and navigating the shallow waterways that connected villages, markets, and cities across the Yangtze Delta and Pearl River basin.

The woven cabin at the center of this model — a tight herringbone weave of rattan over a bamboo frame — is a detail that appears in paintings and woodblock prints from the Song Dynasty onward. It is a form so practical and so beautiful that it survived largely unchanged for over a thousand years.
