History & Story

Le Soleil Royal — The Royal Sun — was the flagship of the French Navy under Louis XIV, the Sun King, and the most celebrated warship of the 17th century. Launched in 1669 and rebuilt in 1689, she was a first-rate ship of the line carrying 104 guns, and her decoration was without equal in the age of sail. Commissioned to reflect the glory of France itself, her hull was covered in gilded baroque carvings by the finest sculptors of Versailles, her stern a cascade of allegorical figures, sea gods, and solar imagery befitting a vessel named for the sun.

Le Soleil Royal served as the command vessel of Admiral Tourville at the Battle of Beachy Head in 1690, where the French fleet achieved its greatest victory over the combined English and Dutch navies. She met her end at the Battle of Barfleur-La Hougue in 1692, where, damaged in battle, she was beached and burned to prevent capture — a fate that only added to her legend.

Today, Le Soleil Royal is regarded as the pinnacle of baroque naval architecture — a ship that was as much a work of art as a weapon of war. This 145 cm model honours that legacy in full.
