History & Story

In the rivers and lakes of southern China, the image of a solitary fisherman on a bamboo raft has been a subject of poetry, painting, and philosophy for over a thousand years. From the misty landscapes of the Song Dynasty to the ink-wash scrolls of the Ming, the fisherman at rest — rod in hand, hat pulled low, the world reduced to water and silence — became a symbol of wisdom, patience, and the art of living without hurry.

The bamboo raft beneath him is no mere prop. For generations of river communities across the Yangtze Delta and Pearl River basin, the bamboo raft was the most practical and abundant watercraft available — lightweight, buoyant, and built from the landscape itself. To fish from a bamboo raft was to be part of the river, not merely upon it.

This sculpture brings that quiet tradition into your home — handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where artisans have been shaping maritime heritage into lasting objects since 1980.
