History & Story

The deep-sea fishing vessel is one of the most enduring working boats in maritime history — a vessel built not for war or exploration, but for the daily labour of the sea. From the trawlers of the North Atlantic to the sampans of the South China Sea, fishing boats have fed coastal civilisations for millennia and shaped the culture, economy, and identity of maritime communities around the world.

The style of vessel represented in this model — with its characteristic outrigger booms, deck-mounted nets, and sturdy working hull — is typical of the mid-20th century American Gulf Coast shrimp trawler, a vessel made famous in popular culture and deeply embedded in the heritage of coastal fishing communities from Louisiana to Florida. These boats worked long seasons far offshore, their crews living aboard for weeks at a time, hauling nets by hand and by winch in all weathers.

This model is handcrafted in Ocean Relic Studio’s Zhoushan workshop, where skilled artisans have been building wooden ship models to museum standard since 1980. Each model is built by hand, finished by hand, and inspected individually before leaving the workshop — a tradition of craftsmanship that has remained unchanged for over four decades.
