1. What is a Chinese junk ship?
A Chinese junk is a traditional wooden sailing vessel developed in ancient China, recognized by its battened sails, high stern, and curved hull. Junks served as merchant vessels, fishing boats, and ocean-going ships across Asia for over a thousand years. Today, handcrafted junk ship models are collected as cultural artifacts and historical display pieces that bring Eastern maritime heritage into contemporary living spaces.
2. Where are Ocean Relic Studio models made?
Our traditional Chinese ship models are handcrafted in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, China — a coastal city with a centuries-long tradition of wooden shipbuilding. Our workshop was established in 1980 and holds recognition as an intangible cultural heritage craft. Each piece is built by skilled artisans who have spent years mastering traditional joinery, rigging, and finishing techniques passed down through generations. Our wooden model kits and other ship models are precision-manufactured products, not handmade.
3. Are all your ship models handmade?
No — not all of our models are handmade. Our traditional Chinese ship models (such as Chinese junks, river pleasure boats, and treasure ships) are fully handcrafted by artisans in our Zhoushan workshop using traditional woodworking techniques. Our wooden model kits and other ship models are precision-manufactured products designed for assembly. Each product page clearly indicates whether the model is handcrafted or a kit.
4. What wood is used to build the handcrafted models?
Our traditional Chinese ship models are crafted from premium natural woods selected for grain quality, structural stability, and visual warmth. Common materials include rosewood, teak, and mahogany — the same species historically used in traditional Asian shipbuilding. All wood is finished naturally to preserve its texture and color, giving each model an authentic, aged character that deepens over time.
5. Are the designs based on real historical ships?
Yes. Our models are grounded in documented historical vessel designs from Chinese and broader East Asian maritime history. Sources include the treasure ships of Admiral Zheng He's Ming Dynasty voyages, Song Dynasty merchant junks, and traditional fishing vessels from the coastal regions of southern China. Each design is researched for historical accuracy and adapted for display as a decorative collectible.
6. What makes Eastern ship models different from Western naval models?
Eastern ship models reflect a distinct maritime tradition rooted in Asian history, philosophy, and aesthetics. Where Western naval models tend to emphasize military structure and geometric symmetry, Eastern vessels — such as Chinese junks, treasure ships, and river pleasure boats — feature layered battened sails, curved silhouettes, and symbolic ornamentation drawn from Taoist, Confucian, and folk traditions. This cultural depth gives Eastern models a different kind of presence: less about power, more about history and meaning.
7. Are handcrafted Chinese ship models a good collectible?
Handcrafted traditional Chinese ship models are highly regarded among collectors of Asian antiques, maritime history, and fine woodcraft. Their value comes from the craftsmanship, historical accuracy, and cultural significance embedded in each piece. Unlike mass-produced replicas, hand-built models feature unique wood grain patterns, hand-tied rigging, and individually shaped components — making every model a one-of-a-kind artifact. Many collectors display them in studies, libraries, or dedicated cabinets as long-term investments in art and history.
8. Can these models be used as home decor?
Absolutely. Both our handcrafted Chinese ship models and assembled model kits make striking display pieces for living rooms, home offices, tea rooms, libraries, and Asian-inspired interiors. Their warm wood tones and historical silhouettes create a calm, cultured atmosphere. Many customers place them on bookshelves, mantels, or dedicated display stands as focal points that reflect a refined aesthetic sensibility and invite conversation.

We recommend checking your local customs regulations before placing an order if you have concerns about additional charges.
12. Are models made to order?

Production begins after your order is placed, ensuring each piece receives the full attention of our artisans. Please allow additional lead time beyond the shipping estimate for production. Exact timelines are noted on each product page. We recommend ordering in advance if you have a specific delivery date in mind.
13. How should I care for a wooden ship model?
Keep your model away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent warping or fading. Dust gently with a soft dry brush or a microfiber cloth — avoid water or chemical cleaners. If the wood appears dry over time, a light application of natural wood oil can restore its luster. Display in a stable environment with consistent temperature for best long-term preservation. With proper care, a well-made wooden model will last for generations.
