Chinese River Junk Ship Model – Double-Roof Wooden Boat

This is not a decorative boat. It is a painted vessel — a handcrafted wooden pleasure boat model made to order in the Ocean Relic Studio workshop in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.

On the rivers of ancient China, the pleasure boat — 画船, literally “painted vessel” — was the watercraft of scholars, poets, and officials who conducted their most important conversations on the water, away from the formality of court and city. The double-tiered roof created layered shade for the humid Yangtze Delta summers; the herringbone tile pattern on the canopy was a mark of craftsmanship. This model captures that refinement in miniature: every plank shaped individually, the lattice railings assembled joint by joint, the double canopy tiled by hand — all made in our Zhoushan workshop, founded in 1980 by craftsmen who inherited this form from a living maritime environment.
